The main goal of our project is to generate new insights into the structure, chronology, and functions of the eastern sector of the Roman Empire’s frontier in Dacia, focusing on the Roman fort at Brețcu (ANGVSTIA), and to develop a robust research framework for better understanding the frontier and its sites.

Key Objectives:

  1. Method Expansion & Data Documentation:
    • Scale up previously tested multidisciplinary research methods.
    • Document and analyse archaeometric data (archaeological, topographical, geophysical, geochemical) from Brețcu for historical and cultural interpretation.
  2. Data Fusion & Innovation:
    • Integrate all collected data through advanced “data fusion” techniques.
    • Innovate beyond prior research by data fusion and synthesizing different information sources.
  3. Cultural Reconstruction & International Impact:
    • Reconstruct the cultural-historical context of SE Transylvania during Roman Province Dacia.
    • Correlate literary and epigraphic sources with newly systematized archaeometric data.
    • Publish a monograph in German and/or English to elevate Romanian research globally.
    • Foster international collaboration and train Romanian researchers for EU-level competitiveness.
  4. Public Engagement & Visibility:
    • Improve public understanding of scientific research, especially post-COVID, reducing the negative impact that the pandemic left behind upon the cultural sector.
    • Create an accessible manuscript about the Roman Fort at Brețcu for non-academic audiences to broaden impact and visibility.
